The subject of the etching is Whistler's niece Annie Haden. Whistler spent Christmas in London with his sister, Deborah Delano Haden and brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden. He produced this sensitive etching of their daughter, before he returned to Paris on 12 January 1859.
