Holzman was born in 1907 in Ukrane. He immigrated with his family to Palestine from Vienna in 1922 and settled in Tel Aviv. He began working as a decorator with his father. In 1926, Holzman began private art lessons under Yitshak Frenkel in his studio at the Histadrut Art School.
In 1929, he made the first of several visits to Paris. There, he studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and exhibited frequently. He was extremely influenced by Matisse and Dufy, as a result of his lengthy stays in paris his work has a very French tone, with a Fauvist palette.
Holzman represented Israel at the 1959 Venice Biennale, and participated in a group exhibition of Israeli artists at the opening of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1932. He is highly regarded in Israel and received several national honours.
His work is represented in the Tel Aviv Art Museum and Jerusalem Art Museum.
