Stephan Buxin (Liège 1909 – Paris 1996) had been interested in sculpture since childhood and began learning it at the age of 14. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Liège, Belgium under the sculptor Georges Petit, who remained his teacher and friend. His father advised him that his career would advance if he studied in Paris so the young Buxin arrived in Paris in 1930. From that date until his retirement in 1971, he carried out a part-time art teaching alongside his work as a sculptor. He became a French citizen in 1947. After graduating from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he met Charles Despiau and Robert Wlérick, who supported his choice of figurative sculpture. Despite the pressure of modernist movements, Stephan Buxin stayed away from the artistic fashions of the second half of the twentieth century. He was more appreciated by his patrons for whom he executed busts, figures and bas-reliefs. He worked with clay, stone and especially marble, which he cut directly.

From 1979 onwards, he rediscovered wax and revived its practice. Stephan Buxin's sculptural work ranges from medals to monumental sculptures. He was awarded the Clotilde Prégniard Prize by the Taylor Foundation 1974, Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français 1976, Grand Prix of the Salon des Artistes Français, as well as the 1984 Paul Chabas Medal of Honour for sculpture from the Salon des Artistes Français.
