Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)
Homme Assis type B or also known as Study of a seated Man Type B or Crouching Man
Twelve casts by George Rudier between 1963 and 1967, 13 casts in total including the 'No.0' for the Musee Rodin.
Signed A Rodin to the base and numbered No.5, stamped A.Rodin in relief inside the base and marked with the foundry mark, Georges Rudier Fondeur Paris and inscribed c by Musee Rodin 1963.
There are no lifetime casts of this sculpture, it was conceived in 1885 and exists as a terracotta version in the Musee Rodin collection. The Musee Rodin under the curatorship of Cecile Goldscheider decided to cast this piece in bronze after the success of other previously uncast sculptures such as 'Nijinsky' and the 'Danse movements' cast from the late 1940's through to the early 1960's.
Comprising a seated male figure with his legs stretched in front of him and his feet clasped between his hands, this piece is a stylistic exercise in balance and composition. It represents a more personal side of his work revealed in the exhibition Rodin Inconnu held at the Louvre in Paris, between 1962 and 1963.
