Barnett Freedman (1901-1958)

Woman Waving - coloured wash and pencil on paper

Signed and dated 1940, dedicated to Christian Barman

Provenance: Christian Barman, architect and product designer,  Publicity Officer for London Transport from 1935 and later in charge for publicity for the British Transport Commission a post he held until 1965.

Barnett Freeman was born in East London to a poor family,  he had an artistic talent and worked at night school for five years before being rewarded with a scholarship at the Royal College of Art in 1922.

After leaving the RCA in 1925, he struggled for several years before his career began to take off. He regarded himself as a painter and hoped to make his living as such, but his talent lay with the graphic arts and he designed  many book jackets and posters, The commission to design George V Jubilee postage stamp in 1935 firmly set his career. From 1941 to 1946 he was an Official War Artist, first with the army in France, then with the navy.   Examples of his war paintings are in the Imperial War Museum and Tate.

Freedman designed his first posters for London Transport  in 1936 .this picture is a very rare example of his wartime work and was given to his friend Christian Barman,
