Circa 1883
This painting is one of a series of three small oil on panel paintings painted en plein air at his mother’s estate of Malrome, near Bordeaux in around 1883.
The series of paintings are on the same size panel of similar landscape subjects around the estate. Laurtrec's mother acquired the estate in 1883, the works are thought be from this date as Lautrec would have visited that summer, possibly briefly. He stayed most of the summer of 1886 there and often visited in later years during the summer. He spent the final few weeks of his life at Malrome brought there by his mother after he was struck with paralysis in August 1901.
From the total of Lautrec's 725 known oil paintings around 120 are on panel, most relatively small, and with a few exceptions date from his earliest period until about 1886, the remainder are on canvas or card.
Provenance:
The painting remained in the collection of the Comtesse de Toulouse-Lautrec and was later sold to her nephew Georges Baron Sere de Rivieres who stamped the work with his collectors stamp.
The Baron was a magistrate and was painted by Lautrec in 1889, he owned many works by Lautrec.
